I always pay attention to the animals and insects who cross my path. Every meeting is a potential message. This year, the dragonfly has been a frequent visitor, often circling me or hovering just in front of me when I go out into our garden. Dragonflies are often associated with angels and faeries/nature spirits, perhaps because of their often iridescent, sparkly wings. Their symbolism is as myriad as the colors of their wings. But here’s some of what they mean to me.
Dragonflies have been here for about 300 million years. While their lifespan isn’t long, their presence on Earth is, and they offer us a reminder of eternity.
Dragonflies can fly in any direction (forward, backward, up, down, left, right) and can even hover for a short span like a helicopter. They remind us that we are supported no matter which direction we take.
Dragonflies have virtually unlimited vision, seeing on all sides (almost 360 degrees). They remind us not to limit our perspectives and our dreams and to be able to see the big picture.
Dragonflies see colors we can only imagine. While humans have tri-chromatic vision (we see a combination of red, blue, and green), dragonflies can see ultraviolet and polarized light (up to 30 combinations versus our three). They remind us that even when we cannot see the divine light, it is nonetheless there for us in all its splendid array of color frequencies.
Dragonflies can navigate the water and the air. They lay eggs under or near water, and much of their life is spent there as nymphs as they mature and transform to finally rise in the air. They represent adaptability and metamorphosis. When we feel stuck in our current state, they tell us we can change and shift beyond it. We can learn from the past and embody the wisdom we gained along the way.
Dragonfly’s Wisdom
- You are eternal.
- Your wings will support you wherever you decide to fly.
- Dream and envision without limitation.
- The full spectrum of Divine Light is always there for you.
- Divine alchemy is real. Recognize your power to transcend.
